Howling For Wolves announces support for Minnesota political candidates

(St. Paul, Minn) – Minnesota-based wolf advocacy organization Howling For Wolves announces the first round of pro-wolf candidates they will be supporting in Minnesota’s 2014 General Election.

“Minnesota needs more leaders that will stand up and fight for the humane treatment of the recently-endangered wolf. The majority of Minnesotans do not agree with the three-year-old recreational hunt and our legislators and government leaders should reflect the opinions of the residents they were elected to serve,” said Howling For Wolves Founder and President Dr. Maureen Hackett.

This first round of pro-wolf candidates was selected based on their support for eliminating inhumane baiting, snaring and trapping of wolves, suspending the recreational wolf hunt, and increasing the use of non-lethal methods to prevent wolf-livestock conflicts. They are also primarily incumbents in the Minnesota House of Representatives who have been past supporters of pro-wolf legislation and are in competitive races to retain their seats.

The candidates are:

  • Jason Isaacson (DFL), incumbent candidate for State House, District 42B
  • Peter Fischer (DFL), incumbent candidate for State House, District 43A
  • Yvonne Selcer (DFL), incumbent candidate for State House, District 48A
  • Paul Rosenthal (DFL), incumbent candidate for State House, District 49B
  • Will Morgan (DFL), incumbent candidate for State House, District 56B
  • Jefferson Fietek (DFL), challenger candidate for State House, District 36A

Howling For Wolves will be educating and urging their many active supporters to help these pro-wolf candidates by supporting their campaigns through volunteer efforts and financial donations. Howling For Wolves, through their Action Fund, will continue to gather and disseminate information for wolf advocates looking to support pro-wolf candidates in this fall’s elections.

Howling For Wolves advocates will also be using the hashtag #LiveandLetHowl as part of their pro-wolf efforts on social media.

Howling For Wolves (HFW) Action Fund (501c4) is a Minnesota-based wolf advocacy organization formed in 2012 that educates the public and policy-makers about wolves to foster understanding and tolerance to ensure their long-term survival in Minnesota. HFW seeks innovative non-lethal solutions for conflict prevention and coexistence where wolves are perceived to be a threat. We oppose the random killing of non-problem wolves for sport and the cruel methods utilized. HFW current efforts focus on the Minnesota’s gray wolves, which is the largest and only original wolf population remaining in the lower 48 states.

In 2001 the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) released “The Minnesota Wolf Management Plan” - a plan Howling for Wolves believes provides a rationale roadmap for reducing wolf/livestock conflicts in Minnesota.  As an organization, we support the use of Best Management Practices (BMP’s), including non-public matching funds for ongoing research, development, and dissemination of BMP’s and non-lethal means of wolf control to abate wolf depredation to livestock.
