Minnesota's Wolf Champions

Congresswoman Betty McCollum (Fourth Congressional District) is in a key position in Congress to work for the wolf. Every time commercial interests have attacked the wolf through legislation, she opposes these tactics and has helped keep wolves protected. Throughout 2015, the US House and Senate seemed determined to remove federal protections for wolf populations in the western great lakes and Wyoming. Congresswoman McCollum played a key role in preventing a wolf delisting provision from slipping into the must pass omnibus appropriations bill of 2015. This was a major victory in preserving the last regions of the US where the wolf can be protected.  Right now, commercial interests are pushing to include the same disastrous riders in must pass 2016 funding legislation. Betty McCollum has been strong in her unwavering support for the wolf. She does what she says she will do and plays very strong defense to keep the wolf protected from extinction.

Senator Chris Eaton (MN District 40, DFL-Brooklyn Center) is among the strongest, most fearless voices for wolf at the Minnesota legislature. In the face of powerful anti-wolf interests, she has led the charge in pushing to put in place the original moratorium on wolf hunting and adopt smarter statewide wolf policies. Eaton has skillfully amended wildlife legislation to include pro-wolf policies. Senator Eaton can always be counted on to have the courage to stand up to those that would threaten the survival of wild wolves for future generations. She is truly a friend of the wolf.

Senator Chuck Wiger (MN District 43, DFL-Maplewood) has been a tireless advocate at the Capitol for the gray wolf since the removal of federal protections through delisting the wolf of the Great Lakes  in 2012. Over the past four years, he has authored and advanced legislation to end Minnesota’s unpopular wolf trophy hunt, protect wolf habitat, eliminate snaring and other trapping and baiting methods, and require written permission before setting traps on private land. Wiger understands the urgent need for action to protect Minnesota’s one-of-a-kind wolf population, and is a stalwart champion for all wildlife.

Representative Paul Rosenthal’s (MN District 49B, DFL-Edina) extraordinary effort for wolves was on display last May when he forced an up or down vote on wolf hunting on the floor of the Minnesota House of Representatives. In spite of the majority party’s efforts to prevent any vote from taking place, Rosenthal put our elected officials on the record and exposed the wolf trophy hunt as reckless and unnecessary. While the wolf did not have the votes to win the day, Rosenthal shined a light on those who continue to defend unpopular wolf killing.
